Beginner’s guide to installing Kali Linux, the main OS used by hackers.
This guide is aimed towards those starting on their journey into Cyber Security. If you are already at an advanced level, then this guide may not benefit you.
Kali Linux is legal. After all, it is just an operating system.
However, users can be malicious. Hacking without permission is illegal.
Please only use this for ethical purposes. It is not illegal to install any OS which is licensed and available for download.
Will installing Kali Linux ruin or break my Windows 10 Operating System?
Short answer is NO.
We are going to be running Kali Linux inside a virtual machine. A virtual machine is basically a computer inside a computer. So no harm will come to your actual primary operating system. The virtual machine protects your Windows 10 OS by basically creating a cacoon around your Kali Linux. However, securing your Kali OS is still important! So I will show you how that is done. I have a guide and a video on that too.
Great, what do I need to get started? (RAM and Storage)
For this guide, I recommend Windows 10, with at least 2GB of RAM. (The more, the better.)
You will also need around 20GB of disk space.
Please ensure your virtualization is switched on in your BIOS settings. This is different for every model. Google your model to work out how to do this. Example Below.
The way you access your BIOS to switch your virtualization on is different for Lenovo, HP, Dell, and other models. So please use google to figure this out and switch it on. (Sometimes it is already on)
Let’s get started!
Right we are going to need 3 things to make this work.
1. 7zip (We use this to extract the image out of a compressed state)
2. VMware (I will show you what I recommend)
3. Kali Linux (I will show you where to get this safely)
1. Downloading 7zip
(If you do not know whether you have a 64-bit or 32-bit windows system. This Microsoft FAQ link below will show you how to find out)
Once you know what you are working with, go to google and type in 7zip.
Or click this link below.
Click download.
Save the file.
You might get a windows warning. Click yes to allow 7zip to make changes.
Chose your destination folder (or just leave the default)
Click install.
And we are done! You might need a restart. But I would wait till we have installed everything before restarting.
2. Downloading VMware Workstation 16 player
You can download this by going to the link below.

Or you can go to vmware.com and navigate to the download.
Once this is downloaded open up the installation file and let’s install it.
Next…
Agree and next…
Pick install destination, then next…
Leave the box ticked which says ‘Add VMware Workstation console tools into system PATH’
Next…
Next…
Finally click install!
When finished open it up.
It should look like this.
3. Now time to install Kali Linux!
Go to…
https://www.offensive-security.com/
Scroll right to the bottom, click on ‘Kali Linux Virtual Machines’.
Alternatively, this link will take you straight to the download page.
https://www.offensive-security.com/kali-linux-vm-vmware-virtualbox-image-download/
This Kali Linux file is 2.3GB, so depending on your internet speed this might take a while.
Once this is done you need to Extract the file.
Right click the Kali file, go 7-zip and then select ‘Extract Here’.
Right now we have everything we need, let’s open the machine. Please follow these next steps carefully.
Click ‘Open a Virtual Machine’ then navigate to the file that the extracted Kali image is in.
A small file (around 4kb) like this one will need to be selected and opened.
Once this is done you will have a Virtual Machine on your list!
WE ARE NOT DONE YET PLEASE FOLLOW NEXT STEPS!
Go into ‘Edit virtual machine settings’
Specify the amount of memory (RAM) you would like to allocate to this machine.
Remember this should be around 1/4 of the RAM on your system.
Make sure the Network Adapter is set to NAT.
After this click OK and we should be ready!
Play virtual machine, This will open it up!
On this pop-up, click I Copied It.
let it load
Click Download and Install on this pop up or you can do this later.
Once this is all done, you should be in!
Logging in.
The default login details are as follows:
Username: kali
Password kali
(All Lowercase)
